Required Skill Levels for Courses

 

The best way to improve is to be honest with yourself.


Starting from the beginning is sometimes the best way to keep up with the classes we offer. Even if you have taken classes at other schools in various topics doesn't mean you have learned proper workflow to your full potential.

We are here to help but we can only help you get so far. It is up to you to take the steps necessary to make your workflow effecient and effective in order to achieve your Photographic or artistic goals.

Our skill levels help each student attain the best class suited for their learning needs. It also helps keep each class on the same skill level for the optimal learning experience for the group. Read each of the levels and see which best fits your level of Photoshop and Photography skill.

*All of our classes require basic computer knowledge.

Beginning:

You must know basic computer knowledge with the ability to open files, save files and navigate through folder structures. No formal instruction of Photoshop, Painter, ProShow, Lightroom, or manual mode photography is needed. We suggest opening the program before coming but this level is for those who haven’t opened the package yet. Auto-mode/Program mode/Point and Shoot photographers are welcome to use our wide variety of cameras with help from staff to learn and become acquainted with the next level.

We highly reccomend you take Lightroom, Photoshop Workflow 1 and 2 and Basics of your DSLR before moving on to other classes even if you have taken those classes at other schools before.

Intermediate:

You have already taken Photoshop 1 and 2 and/or Lightroom or have the equivalent basic knowledge as well as Basics of your DSLR. A sturdy understanding of the program layout is required. Course participants should have a basic understanding of tonal and color adjustments and, ideally, be making prints of their own images already. 

Intermediate/Advanced:

The above noted and for those who are comfortable with the basic functions of their DSLR (or RAW compatible) camera equipment, including the use of manual exposure. You should have Photoshop 2 completed or have equivalent intermediate knowledge. Course participants should also be comfortable performing basic optimization tasks with their images using Photoshop with adjustment layers and have basic RAW knowledge. Partcipants must have experience printing their images.

Advanced:

All of the above noted and for those of you comfortable with your DSLR camera equipment. You should be able to maneuver through Photoshop easily. A good understanding of RAW and Bridge. A good understanding of selections, masks, adjustment layers, text, tools, and palettes.
