Course Description

Learn to photograph anywhere, anytime!

Spend the week working with two of the best photographers in their fields. Amy and Judy will teach you how to use lighting to create beautiful and dynamic portraits.  Learn it from both sides; Judy uses only natural light, while Amy manipulates and controls it. After this workshop you will have the confidence to photograph in all different types of lighting conditions. Creating your own style and how to sell your work will be included in the lectures.

Judy uses only natural light and will teach students to see light and how to photograph with an emphasis on the quality of lighting. Amy will demonstrate how to use light modifiers and flash fill in the same situations so that the students can see the differences in technique and lighting styles.
There will be models of all ages for the students to work with. Various locations with different types of lighting will be used. After every session, the student’s work will be shared and discussed for a better understanding of how to create their own style.

This workshop is designed for anyone interested in improving the quality of their images and how to make money doing it!

Schedule Detail

Monday - Introduction to Lighting Styles

The Instructor’s will begin by discussing their work and backgrounds. Students will be asked to bring in some of their own photographs or images that inspire them. This helps us get a feel for where you are in your photography and where you want to go. Morning lecture will include examples of lighting styles. Students will be assigned a partner and will photograph each other before returning from lunch.

After lunch, the instructors will be working with models to demonstrate how to use the light to enhance the attributes of their clients/subjects and locations. Students will learn how to make beautiful images in difficult lighting conditions. Instructors will demonstrate techniques for working with harsh sunlight in locations that are not ideal. The students will create their own images to practice these techniques. Both natural and manipulated light will be used.

Each evening students will choose 5-7 images for review the next morning in class.

Tuesday - Understanding and Creating impact and drama in your imagery

Every morning will start with a review of the previous day’s session. With the use of slideshows, the Instructors will show the students the work created from the day before. Both Instructors will talk about how they use different lighting techniques to create emotion and passion in their images. An evening session will be planned for that night.

After lunch, the students will be working with the Instructors and models. The emphasis will be on Natural Light. Sunset is the most beautiful time of the day so we will spend one evening capturing this light. Instructors, as always, are available for guidance. Both natural lighting and flash-fill techniques will be covered.

Wednesday - Using light to create a unique style

Once again, the morning will begin with a review of yesterdays work. Various lighting techniques and examples of how to create a style using different kinds of light and angles will be covered. Amy will demonstrate with a slide show how she sets up her commercial lighting and explain some of the tricks she uses to get the most out of a location shoot.

After lunch students will be working again with models with an emphasis this time on Manipulated light using reflectors, scrims, diffusion or flash.

Thursday - Passion and Profitability

After reviewing the session from the day before, Judy will discuss how to market and brand your business. Students will get an overview on how to take your passion for photography and make it profitable.

In the afternoon, students will be photographing with both natural light and manipulated light. Working again with models in beautiful locations, Judy will also demonstrate shooting indoors with only window light. Students will then create their own images using this type of lighting. Next Amy will show techniques that will give different results from the same set up. Students will then practice using these techniques.

Friday - Personal Projects and setting goals

In the morning the students will be asked to photograph their partners once again. Lecture with slideshows of the Instructors personal projects will be shared. The importance of experimenting within your sessions and setting personal goals will be discussed.

In the afternoon, a slide show of the best images created during the week will be shown and reviewed for the final day. Time will be set-aside for those students who would like share their work or have their portfolio’s reviewed in more detail.
