About the Course
Spend 5 full days photographing and exploring all that Maui has to offer! Join Hal Schmitt and Randy Hufford of the Institute of Visual Arts Maui as they uncover Maui’s amazing photographic opportunities and show you how to capture images with drama, impact, and WOW factor. This workshop is designed for anyone interested in advancing their experiences in digital imaging and workflows from experienced professionals to all who love the medium and want to advance to the next level.
Maui is incredible, offering the photographer almost too many choices. Come photograph beautiful beaches with perfect sand (from white to black) and the deepest blue-green water and waves, amazing skies, coconut palms, and crashing waves. Climb the stark, alpine landscape of the island’s volcanoes. Prepare for the wonder of the almost lunar experience. Explore deep bamboo forests hiding amazing streams, pools, cliffs, waterfalls and more. Witness dramatic landscapes and seascapes of tropical paradise with sheer cliffs, plunging waterfalls, huge waves, and more! There is also an incredibly diverse flora!
Randy and Hal will lead you to Maui’s best shooting locations and demonstrate the tips, techniques, and tricks to photograph it all. You will experience and learn so many different types of photography. This trip will change your shooting life. • Slow shutter speed work to blur waves and waterfalls • Action • Macro • Landscape • Panoramas • High Dynamic Range (HDR) • Flash • available light • doing a model shoot.
The 5 days also include in-lab processing time and Digital Printing Workshop at The Institute of Visual Arts. Hal will demonstrate image optimization workflow and help you create amazing images using Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, Photomatix Pro, Topaz filters, and more! You will also receive a personalized review of your shooting to help refine your techniques to create more impressive photos and art!
Here is how the schedule will work. Five days of intensive photographic immersion from sunrise to sunset…with available lab time in the evenings.
Day 1
It will start with a group breakfast 8am provided by IVAMAUI at Grandma’s Coffee house located at “the Shops of Keokea” in Keokea. We will then proceed to Institute of Visual Arts Maui located in Kula, just minutes from Grandma’s Coffee house. This first class room experience will allow us to mingle, get to know each other and learn about shooting suggestions and techniques. Lunch will be available from Chef Rebecca around 1pm. We then will conclude with a slide show revealing opportunities of locations on Maui. Around 4pm we will depart to our sunset location. Please note that weather depending we change our locations at the last minute in order to provide the greatest opportunity to capture the most beautiful light. Optional lab time will be available for you to download and work on your images at IVAMAUI in lieu of participating in sunrise or sunset shoots. Lab will be open 8 to 10am and 4 to 6pm.
Wednesday is our sunrise shoot with Tuesday and Friday being the OPTIONAL Early Morning sunrise shoot. This is dependent on the weather and is chosen the previous afternoon. This can change depending on weather and the optimum lighting conditions. This early morning shoot we will usually meet at 4am at IVAMAUI or other location to car pool and gather together as many of us as possible to head out for our location. Breakfast is a European breakfast with us meeting at 10am at IVAMAUI for our next class room session. Lunch will be at 1pm with the lunch prepared by Chef Rebecca. From 2pm to 4pm more educational workflow teaching time.
Monday and Thursday will end with sunset shoot with Wednesday being the optional available shoot or choose to stay at the computer lab and work on your images.
All sunrise shoots start at 4pm.
Photo Adventure Maui specializes in getting great images of Maui. In order to do this we have to be flexible with timing and location. Weather plays a big part in this decision making process. Although we have published start times we do not always adhere to a specific schedule if circumstance dictates a change.

-Other lens choices you might find useful
-macro
-super wide angle or fish-eye

-expect a much higher battery usage rate if working live view -and I'll have y'all using it a lot)

-Compact Flash or SD cards to support long shoots. They are hands down the best available. Remember your usage will be much higher if shooting HDR, pano, or HDR pano.
-stable tripod
-solid ball-head (if you have a panorama attachment/kit bring it along. Quick warning, once you start shooting panos you will do it all the time!
